You need to follow some steps to configure a new hard disk for the first use on Windows 10. These steps are: initialize, partition, and format the disk. Initializing the disk prepares it for use by the operating system, partitioning the disk divides it into one or more logical sections, and formatting the disk creates a file system on each partition.
Use the Disk Management tool or the PowerShell command to initialize a new hard disk on Windows 10. These are the steps for using the Disk Management tool:
Search for "Create and format hard disk partitions" in the Start menu, right-click it, and select "Run as administrator" to open Disk Management with administrator permissions.
Right-click the disk and select Online if it is listed as Offline.
Right-click the disk again and select Initialize Disk.
Pick the partition style (GPT or MBR) for the disk. Use GPT for newer systems and larger disks, and use MBR for older systems and smaller disks. You can learn more about the differences between GPT and MBR from .
Click OK to initialize the disk.
You can also use the Disk Management tool or the PowerShell command to partition and format a new hard disk on Windows 10. These are the steps for using the Disk Management tool:
Right-click the unallocated space on the disk and select New Simple Volume.
Follow the wizard to choose the size, drive letter, file system (usually NTFS), and volume label for the new partition.
Click Finish to create and format the partition.
Do these steps again for each partition you want to create on the disk
